One of the interactive courses in fine arts has Sims using their sketchbook outside to practice their drawing skills, which is a nice detail. While many of the courses have Sims disappearing in campus building rabbit roles for extended hours, a few offer actual classrooms with interactive options such as choosing to pay attention to a lecture or sleeping through its duration. Sims are provided with a list and schedule of courses for the weekdays that function similar to jobs and careers in a normal Sims household. The majority of time at college is spent in classrooms either studying or sleeping through one course to the next. The major disappointment with the campus is the fact that many of the buildings are rabbit holes for entering Sims. The university's campus itself features many iconic college locations such as a student's union. The numerous locations around town were often more appealing than studying both before and after classes. The coffee shop in particular is a great addition to setting the atmosphere of a college town. The university town doesn't only feature a gorgeous and expansive campus, but new locales as well including a coffee shop, bowling alley, comic store, and pub to name a few. The apartments and houses for rent function similarly to normal household lots and offer a less stressful experience than dealing with multiple Sims, much akin to real-life. However, the other Sims never feel connected to the household and they become more of a nuisance than a social benefit. The dorms and fraternity / sorority houses use the game's roommate mechanic that works to some degree in offering a semi-believable experience. While at college, Sims can select from a variety of housing options including traditional dorms, party-centric fraternity and sorority houses, and apartments and houses for rent. A moving van drops by the Sim's house after completing the application process and then proceeds onward to the newly-added university town. They can earn a degree in communications, business, science and medicine, technology, physical education, and fine arts. Lastly, Sims select a desired major in which to earn a degree that ultimately results in increased pay for future jobs and careers. The amount of financial assistance earned is based upon expertise in various skills, school grades, and work experience. Before traveling to college, they must complete an aptitude test that determines the amount of financial assistance they'll receive for paying tuition costs. More info GenreĪn expansion for The Sims 3, The Sims 3 University Life will give players an opportunity to leave home and attend university, where they will enroll in classes, earn degrees and discover the crazy antics and hijinks that go hand-in-hand with the college lifestyle.Sims can enroll in college by either using their phone or computer to begin the application process. Die-hard Sims fans will find plenty of ways to have fun during those weeks away at college, but once graduation’s over and the career path begins, University Life will become a distant memory. The classes, parties, finals, streaking, and keg stands are great touches, but that doesn’t change the fact that you’ll spend a lot of time with your finger on the speed up command, and your family at home may as well not exist in the meantime. However, what works in real life doesn’t always make for compelling gameplay.

In many ways, The Sims 3: University Life does a great job of replicating those wild college years. The balance would work better if you didn’t lose influence relatively quickly, which can feel like a punishment. Gaining social influence requires hanging out with these groups, participating in their activities, and going to their hangouts, which leaves less time for studying and day jobs and creates an unfocused experience. Gaining influence with these groups can net you one of three dream jobs: video game developer, sports agent, or art appraiser. Trying to balance your academic and social lives is made more challenging by the addition of three social groups: nerds, jocks, and rebels. It’s fun to have other Sims around that you’re not tasked with controlling, and dealing with unpredictable housemates might bring back fond memories of your own college roommates. You may have to deal with roommates, and cohabitating with strangers has the same benefits and negatives as real life-they might become your best friends or your worst enemies. Upon arriving in the new college sub-city, your choice of residence includes the dorms, a sorority or frat house, or off-campus housing. In The Sims 3: University Life, any Sim with a high school diploma can enroll in college by choosing a major, the number of credits per term, and how many terms to take on.
